CDC Update: Prepare for Disruptions

CDC warns Americans of 'significant disruption' from coronavirus.

U.S. health officials issued a strong warning about novel coronavirus on Tuesday -- that it's no longer a matter of if, but when it will spread in the U.S., and that Americans should prepare for a "significant disruption."
Until now, health officials said they'd hoped to prevent community spread in the U.S. But following community transmissions in Italy, Iran and South Korea, health officials believe the virus may not be able to be contained at the border.

Realize that the "health official" at the CDC making those statements is Rod Rosenstein's sister. You can't make up fiction this bizarre. Sundance has a recent post with the background at Conservative Treehouse.
I've read hundreds of online articles ranging from Rush Limbaugh "This virus is no worse than the common cold" to the "Andromeda Strain!! ZOMG Eleventy!!!" hysteria. At this point I trust NOT ONE cited fact, figure, or statistic.
We prep for the worst and hope for the best as always. But being prepared to self-quarantine, and watching for clues as to when, we are not living in fear and going about our lives as best we can.

The CDC seems to have screwed the pooch on this in a number of ways. Being a personification of Big Government, I don't particularly trust them whether the spokesperson is related to a coup plotter or not.

The statement about it being a matter of when not if it will spread in the US is valid, though. The concern is what that means. It comes down to whether or not any numbers available for N0 (how easily it spreads), % of fatalities or whatever apply to first world societies or just China.

Expect it to spread like crazy in third-world hellholes... like parts of Los Angeles and San Francisco, for example.
Prediction: when it hits LA and/or SF, there will be a total freakout over the fantasy that Trump will give the order to take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.
And when it hits Mexico and points south... well, lack of an enforceable border starts looking like a great big public-health issue.

The damned annual flu spreads just fine, and kills 50K/yr in the U.S., since ever, while spreading to every nook and cranny of the country. Mostly on your own hands.

Bog-standard coronavirus is 20-40X more lethal than flu.
With an r0 of between about 2 and 4.
And an incubation period of 2-14, and possibly as long as 24, days.
How many things do you touch, and people do you come into contact with, in 24 days?

Those of you with slide rules, break 'em out.

That's how bad this might be.

If it's bio-engineered, all bets are off; the numbers could be eleventy, or nothing.

Yesterday, the Chinese prez was stating in a meeting that there should be better rules for bio-research labs. The inference was that he was annoyed that their Woohan bio lab had let this virus loose.

Can't find the video now. Not sure if I erased it, or it got recalled by the producer/sender.
