Oldest Iwo Jima veteran reports to final muster

MACOMB, Ill. — The oldest known surviving Marine from the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II has died.
John Moon, of Macomb, passed away earlier this week, Western Illinois University confirmed. He was 103 years old.

  2. In March-April 1945 my Dad was an Army Air Corp fighter pilot flying P-51 Mustangs from Iwo Jima, escorting B-29's to the Japanese home islands.

    The Marines saved his life on the night of March 26, 1945 when the pilots were attacked by 200-300 suicidal Japanese.

    Thank you, Marines.
