He was musically inclined from a young age, as most successful musicians are. After a tour in Korea he started playing radio stations where he met Chet Atkins (of course he knew Chet; everybody knew Chet). Chet introduced him to Capitol Records and the rest is history. By 1957 he had a crossover hit, Young Love that hit #1 on both the Country and Pop charts. Unlike the rockabilly artists (Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis), James was known as "The Southern Gentleman" because of his, well, gentlemanly demeanor.
And it wasn't fake - he really was like that. He was married to his wife for 59 years, from 1957 right up until his death. At the CMA Awards when he was inducted he opened his acceptance speech by saying "I want to thank my Good Lord for the career He has given me." He was a gentleman to the end.
This song was the last of his 16 song streak of #1 hits.
Here Comes Honey Again (Songwriter: Sonny James)
Just about the time I pull myself together
When the hurt in me gets better than it's been
Just about the time I feel life's still worth living
It's funny, here comes honey, again.
Honey comes and honey stays just long enough to tear my mind up
Then she leaves me just the way I knew she would
And I have to start all over start to picking up the pieces
Times like this I almost wish she'd go for good.
Just about the time I'd find myself a new love
When this broken heart she left me starts to mend
Then that's just about the time that I'll be saying
It's funny here comes honey, again.
Just about the time I feel life's till worth living
It's funny here comes honey again.
It's funny here comes honey again...
