And they fought through being in the wrong places, separated from their units, and without officers in some cases. Yet they triumphed by sheer perseverance, never giving up, and just plain guts.
Long story, but... I was in the audience during a high school presentation that was supposed to discourage young people from using illicit drugs. One of less than respectful kids asked one of the adults in the room if he had ever used drugs. The adult sharply replied, "No." Then, with a thoughtful expression said, "Except one time. The day I jumped with the 101st on D-Day. When I went out the door I injected myself with morphine, because I figured that I was going to die anyway and if I lived I would be so shot up that I would need the morphine for pain. I puked all the way down."
