Alison Krauss, Yo Yo Ma, Natalie MacMaster, Shane Shanahan & Cristiana Pato- Wexford Carol
As so often is the case, Irish music reminds us of the reason for the season. I find that the pipes add a deeply mystical touch. The lyrics below are a little different, trandscribed by William Grattan Flood from a local singer in County Wexford, and published in the Oxford Book Of Carols in 1928.
English lyrics
Good people all, this Christmas time, Consider well and bear in mind What our good God for us has done In sending his beloved son With Mary holy we should pray, To God with love this Christmas Day In Bethlehem upon that morn, There was a blessed Messiah born.
The night before that happy tide, The noble Virgin and her guide Were long time seeking up and down To find a lodging in the town. But mark how all things came to pass From every door repelled, alas, As was foretold, their refuge all Was but a humble ox's stall.
Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep To whom God's angels did appear Which put the shepherds in great fear Prepare and go, the angels said To Bethlehem, be not afraid For there you'll find, this happy morn A princely babe, sweet Jesus, born.
With thankful heart and joyful mind The shepherds went the babe to find And as God's angel had foretold They did our Saviour Christ behold Within a manger he was laid And by his side the virgin maid Attending on the Lord of Life Who came on earth to end all strife.
There were three wise men from afar Directed by a glorious star And on they wandered night and day Until they came where Jesus lay And when they came unto that place Where our beloved Messiah lay They humbly cast them at his feet With gifts of gold and incense sweet.
Irish Lyrics
Ó, tagaig' uile is adhraigí An leanbh cneasta sa chró 'na luí Is cuimhnígí ar ghrá an Rí A thug dár saoradh anocht an Naí. 'S a Mhuire Mháthair i bParrthas Dé, Ar chlann bhocht Éabha guigh 'nois go caomh, Is doras an chró ná dún go deo Go n-adhram' feasta Mac Mhuire Ógh.
I mBeithil thoir i lár na hoích' Ba chlos an deascéala d'aoirí, Go follas don saol ón spéir go binn Bhí aingle 'canadh ó rinn go rinn. "Gluaisig' go beo," dúirt Aingeal Dé, "Go Beithil sall is gheobhaidh sibh É 'Na luí go séimh i mainséar féir, Siúd É an Meisias a ghráigh an saol."
Not to be a bummer but I have a bad aftertaste for Alison Krauss.
Back when she was just starting to shine and was booking festivals, gigs, shows, whatever, the locale I lived in at the time were folks that loved her music as it was their music. So a show was set up, paid for by countless folks with ticket sales after it was booked.
Months down the road her career went into orbit, and at some point did her best to pull out of having to do this podunk gig. She still had to contractually do it, but it was a sad performance and her whole vibe was like I am here cause i have to be and doing the minimal and im out of here as soon as I can be.
Thank you.
