You Are Dust

Today, all over the world, Catholics and other liturgical Christian churches will hold Ash Wednesday services. It marks the beginning of Lent, the somber period before the Easter celebration.

The material part of the service is when each participant is marked with ashes and, traditionally told, "You are dust and to dust you shall return.". A reminder of our mortality and the value of whatever we think is important in this life.

"By the sweat of your brow
    you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”
--Genesis 3:19

You return man to dust
and say, “Return, O children of man!”
For a thousand years in your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past,
or as a watch in the night. --psalm 90
