I started with tubes, and watched transistors come on the scene.

When FET's came out, all the solid-state guys were flummoxed because they just couldn't get their brains wrapped around a high-impedance, voltage controlled device, while us old "Tube Guys" smiled and showed the youngsters what they didn't "get".

Fun geek fact - with the application of sufficient voltage, a transistor can be transformed from an active device into a 3-terminal resistor network!
