I'm putting the background material in the comments to keep the post itself focused on the thought of the day.
Maurice Durufle was a 20th Century composer, one of the few who were (in my opinion) worth listening to. This piece was originally commissioned by the French Vichy government, but not completed until after the end of the war. Durufle had been studying Gregorian chants, and the musical themes in this work are strongly influenced by those much older pieces. It seems to fit the solemnity of a requiem mass particularly well.
