Officer Involved Shooting

This is from two years ago.

Two officers making a traffic stop for a driver that ran a stop sign. The officer on the passenger side has left the vehicle and has walked around behind so to make an approach on the driver's side of the stopped car. Then the driver gets out. If he had been aiming, the outcome of this one would have been very different.

The newspaper report is here.

Here's the officer's car afterward. You can see where the rounds impacted the car as well as the holes in the windshield where the officer returned fire.

When we are having a national discussion about police behavior, I think it's important to remember what sorts of situations can occur and how fast things go wrong.

2013,nationwide on duty deaths to keep things in perspective. You can't go around viewing every citizen as a potential killer when traffic accidents actually accounted for more deaths.

That is the training issue side of things. As a country, we are taking young people and training them in their law enforcement courses to think exactly that, every non-cop is a threat.

You list deaths. You don't list incidents in which a "routine traffic stop" winds up with an officer being assaulted in some way, with fists, feet, baseball bats, cars, knives, guns, etc.

That said, it does appear to be the case that cops are being trained to see non-cops as a threat. I took my wife to a training session sponsored by NSSF, called First Shots. The trainer was a deputy sheriff in a neighboring county, and he told us that he has to remind himself that not everyone he encounters as part of his job is a criminal - and that teaching shooting classes to law-abiding citizens helps him with that.
