One hundred years ago, the German Empire declared war of France. The cascade had slipped beyond the bounds of restraint and the landslide had begun. The commemorations are happening all over Europe. I found this one to be quite moving:
888,246 red ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, one for each of the Commonwealth's war dead. It's worth your while to click through for the many other pictures.

And those poppys will be on sale later... For a GOOD cause!
ReplyDeleteFrom something I read a while back, the Tsar and his secret-service were funding and helping enthuse the Serbian separatists, providing cover/documentation/guns - and egging them on, saying "Shoot the nasty rich-old Arch-duke whoosis!" So it was not entirely just a case of Big Dominoes toppling as I was taught, The Triple Entente and all that - there were already other machineries in motion behind the curtains? Damn Russians at it again even today.
ReplyDeleteLovely flowers.
