EDITED TO ADD (7/3): The BoingBoing story says that this was first published on Tagesschau. Can someone who can read German please figure out where this originated. And this should make all my readers feel all warm and fuzzy:
And, since Cory said it, I do not believe that this came from the Snowden documents. I also don't believe the TAO catalog came from the Snowden documents. I think there's a second leaker out there.
EDITED TO ADD (7/3): More news stories. Thread on Reddit. I don't expect this to get much coverage in the US mainstream media.
One expert suggested that the NSA's intention here was to separate the sheep from the goats -- to split the entire population of the Internet into "people who have the technical know-how to be private" and "people who don't" and then capture all the communications from the first group.Because I'm the #1 Google result (out of 13 million) for "How to hide your data transmissions from the NSA". And guess who's the #1 Google result (out of 28 million) for "How to hack a classified network"?
I'll save a seat on the bench at the camps, you dirty terrorist.
UPDATE 7 July 2014 14:47: Post title changed from "Is there a second NSA leaker?"
"XKEYSCORE selection rules that target users -- and people who just visit the websites of..."
ReplyDeleteSo you can probably count on most of your regular readers to be included on that list as well.
WHEEE!
The German article says that two German public television networks (NDR and WDR) have excerpts of NSA source code. This code could be from Snowdon, or from someone else - no hints in the article.
ReplyDeleteThis source code contains explicit references to surveillance targets, among other things, people running Tor exit nodes. Certain specific German addresses are apparently explicitly included, which is the topic of the article.
So they are following you to see what you and people who associate with you may be saying. Kinda like planting a stooge in your history class in the 60s because you were the faculty advisor to the SDS. . .

ReplyDeleteFunny, the NSA never used to care about that.
deadmandance, LOL
Oh joy, ANOTHER damn list I'm on... :-)
ReplyDeleteI have no illusions that I'll ever be interesting to FedGov.
ReplyDeleteWhether I read this blog, or not.
I'm kind of boring. Typical American guy. Independent. Capable. Outdoorsy. Hunter, fisherman. Farmer. Capable of harvesting and growing his own food. Don't really need much from anyone else, but appreciate what I can get through voluntary cooperation and commerce...
Oh shit. Never mind....
I'm kinda at a point now where IDNGAF.
ReplyDeleteOne of two things will happen: nothing, because these incompetent shitheels couldn't seal up a zip lock bag; or, I'll be assigned to a camp. In the case of the former, nothing to worry about; in the case of the latter, I'll either be dead in the effort to corral me, or soon will be.
There are days I feel that if you aren't on a government watch list then I shouldn't trust you.
ReplyDeleteGee, and I've done at least two articles on TOR/TAILS.
ReplyDeleteDo you know Morse code?
When we get to the camps, I'll be the guy whistling "CQ DX" kinda low. Or something like that.
I don't consider myself notably paranoid, but I decided several years ago that any data I ever put on any machine that subsequently touched a network should, at minimum, be flagged as potentially compromised. By now I assume everyone needs a multilevel personal security scheme such that access to really life-or-death critical information will require outright tag-team, shoe-leather, black bag, old-school action. I have no idea how widespread those skills even are, these days, in any sense but the virtual.
ReplyDeleteOK, so maybe I am notably paranoid. That doesn't equate to being notably misguided any more (assuming, just for the sake of argument, that it ever did).
Dude, keep this up and we'll be starting a National Borepatch Fan Club. - oh wait, you have one...
ReplyDeleteI'm of the mind that being on the list of bad guys for this administration in particular, and the government in general for the last say 30 years is a sign you understand the constitution and actually view it as a good thing. You are a Good Guy.
If you're only listed on the Democratic National Committee donor list (geez that sounds so 50's commie) then you are a useful idiot.
Not sure how many lists I'm on - I know I gave up airports when I no longer HAD to fly for work - I got yanked out of line EVERY time - random my ass.
I bow to your superior List Fu. Keep up the good works.
I will gladly occupy the same camp bench as you.
