There is one axiom that I intend to teach my children, because it is so fundamental to existing in modern society:
"Why is he telling me this, and why is he telling me this NOW?"
What it all boils down to, in the end, is that we're all either producers, looters, or salesmen.
Excluding the looters from this discussion, you can either be a producer or a salesman.
The head PhD in any university department doesn't produce anything, and so in the end, he is nothing more than a salesman - trying to sell the product that someone else is supplying, and in that process, make his own living.
So when he tells you that getting a degree is absolutely necessary in this job market, ask yourself "why is he telling me this, and why is he telling me this NOW?"
THe answer, more often than not, is because he's selling something.
The savvy buyer will then work to determine if that product is snake oil, or really the elixir that it has been presented to be.
It depends. ;-)

ReplyDeleteBesides, school is easy and work is hard.
