Condition Orange

Isegoria has a fabulous post about situational awareness.

  1. I had read that earlier, and my thoughts began with, "Well, who doesn't . ." and stopped myself. Who doesn't know this? Everyone under 30 with an iPhone, it seems to me. And I saw a commercial today with some self-absorbed twit saying something along the lines of "I have my earbuds in all day long" because that way he can listen to only what he wants to hear. The technical, psychological term for someone like this is idiot. In the vernacular, unemployed. (Yes, yes, I know commercials exaggerate things to make their point. I have seen beer and car commercials. But this was so narcissistic that I almost gagged.)

And it's not just becoming a victim of the knockout game. You can see the occasional story of someone waling off the end of a pier, or into a fountain. My wife, who works in downtown Baltimore, attended a briefing from the Baltimore City Police about how to avoid being mugged outside her place of work: the Federal Courthouse!

If you're not paying attention, you will be paying the piper.
