RKB - I'd say Tolkien tried very hard for that TPK. Two members died outright. One was permanently disfigured twice and nearly killed at least three times. The others all came pretty close to dying unpleasantly at least once, if not many times over. If he hadn't allowed a Wizard/ Celestial in the party and an arguably semi-divine Ranger, they would have bought the farm.
In Epic Fantasy the hero defeats the villain. In Urban Fantasy she sleeps with him.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder society is so screwed up.

ReplyDeleteGygax would have gone for a TPK, Tolkien was a pushover GM.
