I must be missing something

Via Foseti, we see that Washington D.C. has had the lowest number of murders in half a century.
Today we mark what appears to be a milestone for D.C.: 2012 saw fewer than 100 homicides.

As of Monday morning the homicide count was 92, the lowest annual tally since 1963.

It’s worth noting that MPD’s official tally is 88 homicides. That number does not include four deaths that were ruled self-defense.
Interesting that homicides spiked after the government banned handguns in the 1980s, turning Washington D.C. into the "Murder Capital of the World".  Interesting how homicides plummeted after the Supreme Court ruled in Heller v. D.C. that citizens possess an individual right to keep firearms in the home for personal self defense.

It's almost as if the Gun Control crowd has it backwards when they say that more guns means more crime.  I mean, I must be missing something basic.

  2. I wonder if gun sales spiked after that ruling in the D.C. area.

  3. Or is could be that gun ownership is uncorrelated in any way.

Gun control is officially sanctioned tea leaf reading by people who likely never encountered a statistics textbook.

I walked into a store a few days ago and a lady behind the counter was discussing with their colleague in an absolutely matter of fact way that her nephew had been shot for "the first time" and that was likely to teach him a lesson to mix with large crowds. The implication being young African American males can expect to be shot at least once in random violence among other African American males. The only reason our body count is not massively higher is that we have a very well practiced trauma center skilled in dealing with gun shot wounds.
Where are Obama's tears when you need them.
