Like lots of young musicians: She has a nice voice, but clearly has never had any singing lessons. She urgently needs some. Self-taught will only take her so far.
Not that I disagree with your statement, but my guess is that "multi-millionaire" is probably far enough as far as she's concerned.
THere's the other, extreme opposite of this, for which I'll use Adele as an example - its the example where the singer HAS taken voice lessons, DOES have a simply awesome voice, and still manages to make music that sucks because she relies wholly on her voice and nothing else to make true music. Playing a chord on a piano, letting it resonate while you sing two stanzas, stop, play another chord, sing another two stanzas while it resonates, and continue ad nauseum is not good music. It is vocal masturbation. If the tempo of your song is so ethereal or non-existant that a person listening to it couldn't tap his foot to the tempo if you paid him $50, then you've managed to record nothing more than 7 minutes of your wonderful voice, but no music whatsoever.
SOme of Adele's music gets a pass, like "rolling in the deep" for instance, but her version of the Cure's "Lovesong" is absolutely pathetic, and it has nothing to do with her singing. It could have been awesome if you coupled her voice with some instrumental musicians with some talent, but what we got was her singing the song to a pre-recorded audio track that is one level up in quality from what you can make automatically on your Yamaha keyboard.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you posted this version and not the dubstep version...
ReplyDeleteGood song for the lake in the summer. Seems a million years away after the 8 inches of snow we got last night here in Spokane.
