Keep yer Gubmint spies off my Internet searches

Blogbrother PISSED emails me about a neat anonymous search engine, ixquick.  It anonymizes your searches so that prying eyes can't recover it.  They also have an anonymous proxy service which is particularly interesting when you think about Internet telephony.

You can use either the generic service which queries the top search engines, or use their StartPage® option which uses Google's results.  However, unlike Google it doesn't track your IP and strips all identifying info from the query.

  1. Is this much different than DuckDuckgo?

  2. Jon, yeah same idea. What's interesting about ixquick is that it's based in the Netherlands (i.e. international borders make things slightly more complicated for snoopy Feds).

  3. But if you find yourself going off on long tangents about personal matters, it's time to get back on track. Your topic will also influence how personal or professional you want to come across in your style. A good rule of thumb is: if you wouldn't say it in an email to a client, it shouldn't go up on your company's blog.

You will start to see what your visitors and customers respond to and tailor your efforts to give them what they want.

  6. One of the reasons I keep drifting back to Firefox for personal web use: the navigation bar will so a search whenever the text entered is not a straight URL, and then there is the search field on the navigation toolbar to the right of that.

I've set the URL field to search Startpage, but if I want Google specifically that is the default choice in the search field -- although the others (Bing etc.) are a click away.

  7. Startpage is the same as Ixquick just easier to remember.

Could also use TOR and really get l33t. Just don't try to log into FB using TOR or it will try to shut you out.
