That's a sound I never, ever get tired of hearing. At the last air show I went to at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, GA, they had a P-51 done up with the red tail of the Tuskeegee Airmen squadron. The pilot flew the hell out of that plane, making several low, fast passes. Made my whole month.
That merlin engine, even if built by packard, is a work of art. Back in Sept 2010 in Duxford, England, there was a 16-plane fly by of (also merlin powered) Supermarine Spitfires. The fly-by was to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. "This as their finest hour."
I'll never forget the first time I went to the airshow at The Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA.
