Well, you have to admit that this explains Pachelbel's Canon in G

Epic musical rant is Epic.

You think this isn't ranty enough?  Ten Million Youtube views would disagree with you.  And this explains essentially all music since The Beatles.
Punk music really is a joke,
it's really is just baroque  ...
Awesome.  The 90's are prominently displayed here.  VH-1's I Love The 1790s.  Heh.  From the Youtube comments:
Let's see if I can do this: 1. Pachabel Rhythm (Duh). 2. Vitamin C - Graduation Song 3. Aerosmith - Crying 4. One Tin Soldier - The Legend of Billy Jack 5. Blues Traveler - Hook 6. Green Day - Basket Case 7. Matchbox 20 - Push 8. Better than Ezra - Good 9. Machine Head - Bush 10. U2 - With or Without You 11. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn 12. Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boy 13. Twisted sisters - We're not gonna take it 14. Laverne and Shirley Theme 15. Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry 16. Beatles - Let it be
It's scary to think that there are essentially three different songs, and they were all written hundreds of years ago.  Think I'm joking?

Glad to see the Lonestar reference there.  Even redneck Country music tips it's hat to dead European guys.

  1. The Axis of Awesome's original (heh) presentation on the topic is here. It's got 23 million views so far, so apparently they've struck a chord with people. Well, four chords.

  2. This music major & his wife (whom I met in the music department, natch) are rolling on the floor here. We've joked about the concept for years, and Rob Whatsisname has done a great job with it. Thanks!

  3. Good one, and no wonder 'everybody' can hum those bars... :-)

  4. Wow. I knew about 5-6 of those songs.

    I fit better in 1790 than 1990.

  5. Dave, that video is so full of win that it hurts.

  6. It may well be that all of music was developed by 1790.

But a friend once told me the really suck-o part of working on his degree in Math was that he'd spend months trying to understand some concept only to find that Gauss knew it before he was potty trained.

  7. "It's scary to think that there are essentially three different songs, and they were all written hundreds of years ago."

    Really? Let's see...

    "Bonny Portmore"
    "Hills of Connemara"
    "Rock Around the Clock"
    "Guys and Dolls"
    "Dance Dance Dance"
    "Peaceful Easy Feeling"
    "Danger Zone"
    "Johnny B. Goode"
    "Peppermint Twist"
    "Texas"
    "Orange Blossom Special"

    I could go on...

Now, I'll happily agree that there's a lot of similarity between different songs within the same genre. But just three different songs? Come on, that's like saying that the fact there's only four basic formulae for a TV drama (cop show, expert-on-the-job show, political, and western) means that NCIS and Hill Street Blues are the same thing. It ain't the idea, it's what you do with it that makes it different.

  8. My first thought was the Axis of Awesome song, as well...

  9. And, if you have an electric guitar, you can do them all with three finger chords.
