Lucky

That would be me.  There was a drip in the ceiling in #1 Son's room (right by where the water comes into the house from the street).  I had a plumber come out to fix it, because water in the ceiling doesn't improve with age.

The water heater chose that moment to give up the ghost.  Lucky that, with a plumber in the house.

And hey, I didn't really need that $2,000 anyway.  Probably would have glown it on a Garand and ammo, or something.  Lucky me.

  2. Ouch.

New water heaters are SO much fun... (Although to be fair, I really like our new heat-pump hybrid. I can't hear it sending dollar bills up the chimney like the old oil-fired one.)

  3. That stinks. We woke up to water dripping from our kids bathroom all the way to the basement on Monday. Not fun.

  4. I got the most bitchin' gun you ever saw! Only it wet and round and holds 40-gallons. Back in January? So really I deserve the Ed Brown for all I've been through!

  5. Dirtcrashr, I might have looked at something like your new addition. Sigh.

    Do want.

  6. Robb Allen does the same thing with his home projects. "The counters cost two glocks", etc. I've started doing that.

And it was good luck to have the plumber in the house when the water heater blew. At least you didn't have to pay extra to have him come back out.

  7. Now that's a darn difficult decision. Water heater or Garand?
Garand or water heater? Well let me help you with the decision.
Summer is coming quickly. You can cheaply buy a black hose and leave it out in the sun for an hour or two and have hot water. (100 feet worth or 200 feet worth) But a Garand is FOREVER! - - - - well as much forever as we humans can be expected to expect. By the end of the summer, you will have saved enough money from no electric or gas bills to buy a nice large water heater AND you will have a GARAND!
Use the ear plugs you need to shoot the Garand to ignore the complaints of the other family members that may be on the last few inches of the 200 ft water heating hose.
Remember, everyone else will get over the summer of the water heating hose, but you will have a GARAND for the forseeable future.

Now don't you wish the govt. thought the way I do?

  8. Daddybear, I think it was two Garands and a nice Smith 629. But I take all the credit for planning the collapse of the rusted out water heater when the plumber was already there. Smart, huh?

    Roger, this is genius.

  10. Critter, we had a leak that the plumber fixed, too. All in all, we think we got a decent price, but I'd still rather have a Garand.

  11. Three little words that will serve every homeowner well:

    WATER. IS. EVIL.

Sorry to hear of the trouble, BP...

  12. Ouch. Lost our AC unit last year, mid-May. No black hose to help with that one. I had visions of a Garand, ammo, and a vintage scope/mount for my Mosin 91/30 blowing away in the exhaust from the new unit. *sigh*

Had a slab leak awhile back, in the middle of the kitchen. Managed to fix that one on my own (Lowes rents jackhammers! Fun!), thankfully. Those boogers are expensive!
