Does this 1911 make my ass look fat?

I concealed carried my 1911 yesterday.

It was a long drive from Atlanta to Beaumont, TX, but we wanted to walk to the restaurant from the hotel.  Not being sure what the neighborhood was like, I looped up the holster and carried.  Some thoughts:

1. The holster blows chunks.  The damn thing rode down in my trousers.  Bah.  I'm calling Dennis from Dragon Leather Works, who has all sorts of good stuff (and I like to do business with folks I know, thank you very much).

2. Glad I didn't have a round in the chamber.  Even though the safety seems entirely reliable, the stupid holster did make my ass look fat, and that's not good.  I suspect I'll want a round in the chamber once I have a decent holster.

3. I wanted to order a beer (after the 12 hour drive, see), but couldn't remember Texas' CCW laws.  CCW Uncertainty FAIL.  I think it's similar to driving - don't get drunk, duh (Texas sanity FTW).  But I couldn't remember (Uncertainty FAIL), so no beer.

4. Chicken Fried Steak is a guilty pleasure.  And I think that in Texas, you don't have to feel guilty about it.  Texas FTW!

5. Beer and blogging in hotelroom after long drive, also FTW.

One thing that is a cold, dead certainty: the air smells entirely of freedom here.

  2. I live in TX and tend not to Drink while carrying as NFO said better safe than sorry. Here is the statute pertaining to your dillema.

Texas Penal Code 46.035 sub section (d)
A license holder commits an offense if, while intoxicated, the license holder carries a handgun under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, regardless of whether the handgun is concealed. There is no quantity put on intoxicated.

  4. The state of Texas now considers intoxicated if your BAC is .08 so 1 beer might have been okay, but as a rule, any time I'm handling firearms, I stay away from the adult beverages, period.

Welcome back to Texas. Not much to do in Beaumont unless you head east to Louisiana and go gambling or go fishing. Lots of angling goodness in the Beaumont area I hear.

  5. I forgot one other thing. If there is a 51% sign in a bar it is the same as a 30.06. No Concealed Carry Allowed. Most restaurants are safe.

  6. Southern Belle,

The BAC of 0.08% is only one of the definitions of intoxication that applies.

The other "not full use of mental faculties" also applies.

That is where most Carrying under the influence charges originate.
The police only have to show any level of impairment in order to make the charge stick.

Also, there is no suspension of your license if you carry in a bar that has not properly posted a 51% sign. That was changed in the last legislative session.

  7. Borepatch,

If you want to carry concealed, check out Crossbreed Holster's Supertuck.

I carry my Taurus PT145 in one and I know many other folks are using them. Very comfortable, secure and virtually disappears with a wide variety of shirts.

  8. Stoner Holsters does a great concealed carry holster. I can definitely say that it did not make my ass look fat.

And chicken fried steak is a joy done correctly.

  9. I have an inside-the-waistband Galco that holds my 1911 just fine. That said, I don't carry it much.

I usually carry an Ruger 3 in. SP-101. If I want a full size gun, I carry an XD-45. Good, reliable holsters are not cheap. Make the investment.

You're a long way toward freedom, it's a great thing to watch.

  10. Should probably add that sufficient amounts of chicken fried steak will make my ass look fat--because it will be.

  11. I don't remember offhand where one can find good CFS in Beaumont, but my memory of it was probably obliterated by Lulu's here in San Antonio. ;-)

+1 to what Southern Belle said, and add to that "go to the beach and get drunk & sunburned." Many a weekend from '01 to '06 I spent doing just that down in Crystal Beach. Good times.

Welcome to Texas, BP, glad that you came down. And I really do mean that!

And you tell me, does this make my ass look fat?

nothing breeds civility and manners like an exposed pistol on the person of someone that knows how to handle it.
