Words and shadows

Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak whispers the o'er-fraught heart and bids it break.
-William Shakespeare
Thanks to everyone who's left a comment or emailed during this time.  It's been really overwhelming to see just how much support is out there in our little corner of Al Gore's Interw3bz.

It's been a surprising comfort to me to write about this long, sad journey.  I guess that I shouldn't be surprised to find that yet again, the Bard was right about human nature.  Thanks for everyone's patience as I've stumbled towards some realizations I've had to learn.

But now I'll be getting back to normal, or trying to.  I'll still post a series about Dad, as a tribute (and because he was an interesting man).  But while we are all called to grieve, we are also called to come back from the edge of that Abyss, to our lives and families.  Which is not to say that we don't continue to grapple with the loss; rather, it's to realize that some ships have sailed West, while ours are still waiting in harbor.

My grief lies all within, And these external manners of lament Are merely shadows to the unseen grief That swells with silence in the tortured soul.
- William Shakespeare

  2. I'd like to take this moment to echo what Paladin had said in one of your previous posts -

"Time devours all things, except love."

...and add what someone else had said elsewhere for it fits, I think, with what Paladin had said:

"At the end of life, three things remain: faith, hope and love. The reason love is the greatest is because it is the only thing that will extend beyond the grave. (Who needs faith after he sees God and who needs hope after he's obtained the prize?) God Himself is love and spiritual love is eternal.

If all our love is given to things carnal, we will certainly fear death and the end of all we love. God intends that we develop a love for things eternal in this life. If we accomplish that we have much to look forward at the end.

This is what my mind understands, but my spirit struggles mightily to fulfil."

I hope this brings you comfort, Borepatch. Godspeed to your Dad on his Journey.

  4. Guys with tough relationships with your dads:

Trust me - it's not enough to simply bury the hatchet. You have to let go of the handle and walk away from the stump. Tougher than hell but you'll be grateful.

    Trust me.

He is your past, you are his future.

  7. At least his ship didn't sink in the harbor tied-up to a mooring, but sailed out...
