It's quiet. Too quiet.

Even for a library.  Coyote posts a picture of an abandoned library in Detroit - part of what's increasingly an abandoned city.

It's creepy.  Looking at the pictures, I felt that something was missing - that I'd seen something very nearly like this before.  The creepiness came from an unsatisfied feeling of anticipation.  With a little help from Photoshop The Gimp, I fixed it.

It's OK to use your Outdoor Voice in this library.

Those of you who've been living in a cave for the last 3 years can get the zombie story here.

  1. They just left the books there to rot?

    That makes me sad.

  2. "an abandoned library"

quite possibly the most depressing phrase a bibliophile could ever read.

  3. As depressing as "abandoned library" is, the thought of FREE BOOKS is a nice counter.

Seriously, if they've abandoned the building, and made no effort to clean it out, why isn't it a dibs-for-all on what's left?

  4. An abandoned library..... that is an OBSCENE concept.

Books.. left to rot? Civilization cannot survive such things.

That was my thought. Come the Zombiepocalypse, I'm going to be raiding Barnes & Noble.

And I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is found in the location.

I hope the Dangerous Diminutive Librarian doesn't see this...

  7. Detroit is now off the edge of the world--civilization must start somewhere down at the Ohio border. And that is the far wilderness...

  8. It's one thing to close down a library. That happens all the time. Budget cuts, resource reallocation, and whatnot. It's not like it's the last library we've got, or the best one either.

But to LEAVE THE BOOKS? To ROT?

If the Detroit library system has nowhere else to put those books, I'm sure there are a lot of other libraries that would be happy to have them.

  9. The Detroit Library isn't about BOOKS. It's about PENSIONS and union jobs.
The community organizers have had their way.

  10. bluesun, back on Jan. 5th, was wrong. civilization does NOT start down at the Ohio border.

it starts a bit north of Clare, up around U.S. 10. that is all.
