To readers not familiar with Rosh Hashanah, the simple explanation is that it's the start of the Jewish New Year. That explanation isn't very interesting, though. The interesting explanation is that it's a time for prayer and reflection on creation, and where we've been, and where we're going. Most importantly, to reflect on how we're going - Judgement Day.
