It also has songs about just being lost, and Catherine Britt, a young Australian singer/songwriter, has one that's a real cracker.
High heel hopes and whiskey lies ...
Britt is part of the "Australian Invasion" that's occupied much of Nashville, and her latest album got some production help from countryman Keith Urban. She's living proof that when you get your chance, you grab it with both hands.
Her chance came when she was 11, and went to a Bill Chambers concert, and asked him to sing a particular song. He was surprised that someone as young as her would know the obscure tune, and invited her on stage to perform it with him. It was no looking back from then on. Britt was 14 when her first single was released (she co-wrote it with Chambers' daughter).
You can sort of think of her as the Australian Taylor Swift, only one who writes and sings music for grown ups. Britt has had a few songs chart to the mid thirties (highest was The Upside of Being Down, at #36); What I Did Last Night reached #39. Hopefully she'll get some more air play, but in any case we shall watch her career with great interest.
What I Did Last Night (Songwriters: Catherine Britt, dunno who else)
It's another day after another night
Another sun I never thought I’d see rise
High heel hopes and whiskey lies, OoOoOoh
Feels like a freight train is running right though my head
My little black dress smells like cigarettes
Napkin with no name, just an address
Had me a good time…. I guess
(Chorus)
How am I going to get my life together
As long as its not going to get any better
I don’t know where to start
I'm falling so far behind
Mama says I gotta start acting like a lady
Daddy’s just worried about his baby
How am I supposed to straighten up and fly right
When I don’t even remember what I did last night
Shelly said she saw me hanging on an astronaut ... not
Letting him lie though his teeth cause his smile was hot
I’m sitting here sucking down second thoughts
Little hair in the dark … no this has got to stop
How am I going to get my life together
As long as its not going to get any better
I don’t know where to start
I'm falling so far behind
Mama says I gotta start acting like a lady
Daddy’s just worried about his baby
How am I supposed to straighten up and fly right
When I don’t even remember what I did last night
How am I going to get my life together
As long as its not going to get any better
I don’t know where to start
I'm falling so far behind
Mama says I gotta start acting like a lady
Daddy’s just worried about his baby
How am I supposed to straighten up and fly right
When I don’t even remember what I did last night
OOOHHH my, now thats a "country" song!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot that "Nashville Sound" crap that was foisted on us in the '80sand '90s. And even that soft pop stuff they peddle now a days...
