Hold off upgrading to Ubuntu 9.1

Both my regular readers know that I'm an Ubuntu Linux fan. But it seems that the new release has some rough edges:

Ubuntu 9.10 is causing outrage and frustration, with early adopters wishing they'd stuck with previous versions of the Linux distro.

Blank and flickering screens, failure to recognize hard drives, defaulting to the old 2.6.28 Linux kernel, and failure to get encryption running are taking their toll, as early adopters turn to the web for answers and log fresh bug reports in Ubuntu forums.

Perhaps the Ubuntu team rushed their release to get it out before Windows 7, but this one doesn't quite seem up to their usual standards. I'm still a fan, but I'll wait a month before I upgrade.

  1. Being a "newbie" I did an on-line upgrade, but I have the 9.04 distro on an ISO CD if I need to go back.

  2. I'm hoping my distro team (OpenSuse) doesn't have similar issues. They have their new release in a week. :-/

  3. Do you know of a distro that runs well on Mac hardware? I've got an old iBook Indigo that I'm thinking of trying to put Linux on to play around with. I was able to get a low end version of OSX to run on it, but as I'm not a normal Mac user, I often find it a little awkward. I'm wondering if there's a Linux distro that will run the modem, and Airport card, as I think those are proprietary to Apple.(not sure, so don't hold me to that)

Anyway, just curious as to what might be available for such a critter, as it's been 15 years or more since I've really played with Linux.

    Thanks,

    Casey

  4. And a sh*tload full of bad device drivers too.

Heck... it's beginning to look like a Micro$haft OS! LOL!

Hey, Casey, there are several versions of Linux that work on a PPC. If memory serves, the iBook was a G3, so you should be able to install one of several distros - including one named... Ubuntu.

  5. Installing Windows 7 as I type this. I am interested in possible dual booting though. It has been at least since RedHat 4 or so since *nix has resided on any of my gear.

  6. I just recently installed ubuntu 9.1 on a eeepc 1005hab. thankfully i haven't had any problems with it like i've read on forums. Being the first time i've actually installed I would have been pulling my hair out, haha.
