New flash: Democrats don't have a death wish

Who'd have figured?
Poised after last year's election to push back against the National Rifle Association's heavy firepower, the Democrats have in rapid order conceded ground on the gun issue. They've allowed concealed-carry weapons in national parks, considered easing gun restrictions in the District of Columbia, and turned back a campaign pledge on gun-record transparency.

[snip]

For Democrats, reluctance to take on the gun lobby is tied to a desire to hold onto their majority in Washington as they pursue a progressive agenda on issues ranging from the economy to healthcare.
Well, yeah. They may be corrupt, but they're not stupid. The usual suspects are Sad Pandas, too:
"Why people fear the NRA is something we're having an extremely hard time getting our hands around. Frankly, we're baffled," says Ladd Everitt, a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence in Washington.
A story from that Right Wing trash network, Fox ABC News. Actually fair and balanced, quoting Eugene Volokh a couple of times. Who's have figured?

  1. Ted,

In light of this post, I give you another looming 2a showdown. The NRA has petitioned the SCOTUS for Cert. The issue is incorporation of the 2nd by the 14th amendment. Two cases are at hand - a 9th circuit case (Nordyke) where the judges voted in favor of incorporation and a 7th circuit case (NRA v City of Chicago) where the judges held against incorporation. And with this conflict in hand, the NRA is taking thinks to the highest rung on the ladder. It will be interesting to see if the SCOTUS grants writ, and will be further interesting to see about the ruling. Like Heller, this will probably be a 5 to 4 decision. I found the first post about this case on johnrlott.blogspot.com but it is probably elsewhere.
