US Army with pet dogs - defeats Nazis, saves world. You know, I bet that the K-9 Corps would be pretty handy against Nazi Zombies, too.
US Army with cats - six-year involvement in low-intensity conflict, of which both the causes and likely outcome are still sorta iffy.
More seriously, if you like dogs, you need to read her post. Then you need to click her link to the John Burnam Monument Foundation, which talks about decorated, veteran dogs. I just lost an hour, reading about Chips, who had his medals revoked in World War II, and about how we left a bunch of K-9 dogs behind when we left Vietnam (there's a cozy place in Hell for the man who approved that policy).
You might also want to check out the Military Working Dog Foundation. Unbelievably, old K-9 dogs were put down, until an act of Congress forced the military to wise the heck up (there's also a cozy place in Hell for the joker who approved that no-gold-watch-for-u-how-about-nice-lethal-injection policy).
With how much I love German Shepherds, this is probably in my future.
