Why George W. Bush was arguably as dangerous to the Republic as Barack Obama is

Take a look at what happened in per-capita government expenditure between 2001 and 2008:

In all honesty, you can't blame Obama for that.  This occurred when he was still sounding reasonable.

My opinion of Bush 43 went south as soon as the Patriot Act crossed his desk.

Homeland Security, TSA ... all his fault. Obama merely doubled down.

It's not as simple as a simple chart. You need to add in the Democrats retaking congress in 2006. You need to add the expense of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A huge component which I will readily lay at his door is the expansion of Medicare Part D. You also need to consider the housing crash due to Dodd-Frank that finally hit during Bush's term. Still, all that said - deficit spending was decreasing under Bush. Businesses were growing.

If you compare Bush to Obama . . . not even in the same universe.
