I was *going* to post

But instead, there was a plumbing emergency in Camp Borepatch.  Water leaking through the ceiling emergency.

I, of course, am 900 miles away at Forward Operating Base Borepatch.  Sigh.

And I was even starting to think that the budget might let my birthday present be a Garand.  Oh well, ceilings are good, too.

Just in case misery does love company: My birthday present was a new ac unit that I'll be paying for the next 12 months or so.

Summer time blues.

It's a shame, it truly is. A friend is urging me to pursue a Garand as well, but ... there's always a "but", isn't there?

Buy the Garand. Sooner or later you can put up some sheetrock, but a nice ceiling will not help you when the zombies come up the driveway.

I recommend fixing the leak. Jut not the cosmetics.

Neither will a Garand - all that well, anyway. Why would anyone want an 8 shot, no DBM high-powered, long range rifle onto which you cannot properly mount a scope - especially when said rifle has the added feature of including an alarm ring to let your enemy know when you've used all of your bullets?

Never really understood the love affair with the Garand. yeah, it helped us win WWII because it was better than the other guy's infantry rifles at the time, but compared even tot he "second generation" of the same gun - the M14, the Garand is sorely lacking.
